Validating software design

IEC 61508-3 (7.9) gives general requirements for software verification.

After verification, the results are documented containing items verified and the information (like input from the previous lifecycle phase, standards and tools) against which the verification has been done.It also defines the overall behavior of the software, and how the software elements interface and interact. To carry on to the next phase the information from the current software safety lifecycle phase shall be verified. The main reason for doing this is indicated in Figure 1, (1).It shows that savings of up to 100:1 are possible by finding and fixing problems early rather than late in the life-cycle.
